With heavy hearts, family, friends, students and colleagues are mourning the death of Kofi Akamani, a 48-year-old Southern Illinois University Carbondale professor whose life was tragically cut short following a shooting Saturday evening near Lake Road between Murphysboro and Carbondale, Illinois.<\/p>\n
Akamani dedicated more than a decade to education, research and mentoring at SIU. He joined the university in 2011 and became a respected professor whose work connected environmental research with the challenges facing rural communities. For the students and colleagues who knew him, his impact extended beyond the classroom through the knowledge, guidance and support he provided throughout his career.<\/p>\n
According to authorities, Jackson County sheriff\u2019s deputies responded at approximately 5 p.m. Saturday, September 19, to reports of a shooting near a residence off Lake Road. Akamani was transported to Memorial Hospital of Carbondale, where he was pronounced dead from injuries sustained in the shooting.<\/p>\n
Betty Akamani, 35, was arrested following the initial investigation. The Jackson County Jail confirmed that she faces charges of first-degree murder and aggravated battery. Information regarding her first court appearance had not been confirmed at the time of the available report.<\/p>\n
At Southern Illinois University Carbondale, Akamani served as a professor of forest recreation and conservation social science. He was promoted to full professor in 2024 and also directed the agricultural sciences doctoral program and graduate studies in forestry.<\/p>\n
His academic work focused on how rural communities manage natural resources and respond to environmental and economic changes. His contributions reached national and international levels, including work connected to the Fifth National Climate Assessment and international environmental assessments addressing biodiversity, water, food and health.<\/p>\n
In June 2026, Akamani was elected secretary general of the International Union of Biological Sciences for a three-year term, reflecting the international reach of his academic career.<\/p>\n
Born and raised in Ghana, Akamani earned degrees in Ghana, Norway and the United States. He received academic honors during his career and also served as editor-in-chief of the Journal of Sustainable Forestry.<\/p>\n
